Beyond Symptoms: Transforming Trauma Relief for Lasting Change
In today's fast-paced world, addressing symptoms rather than the root causes of our problems has become a common approach. But what if ignoring the deeper issues posed a risk to our well-being? Imagine having a gallstone--without any pain to alert you, it could be life-threatening. Even if the pain is mild and managed with medication, the persistent gallstone could still be fatal. This analogy highlights how misidentifying symptoms as the real problem can delay healing.
The Fawn Response: A Mask for Deeper Struggles
One coping mechanism we often exhibit is the "fawn" response--going along to get along. We might appear unfazed by stressors, neither fighting nor retreating, but rather, posing in a state of compliance. This can mask unresolved emotions and traumas, preventing us from acknowledging and addressing our true feelings.
The Danger of Suppressing Emotions
Controlling emotions is easier said than done. Many people strive to take responsibility for their emotional responses, sometimes prematurely shutting off their emotions entirely. This approach is unhealthy, obscuring both the symptoms and the core issue. Frequently, our solutions resemble a "whack-a-mole" approach, where addressing one issue like procrastination merely allows another, like perfectionism, to surface. Often, these are micro traumas that accumulate, unprocessed, and unresolved, leading to emotional explosions or, in some cases, internal collapses that harm our mental well-being.
Reframing the Inner Critic
When dealing with our inner critic, it's helpful to shift our perspective to view it as an "inner worrier" or protector concerned for our well-being. This internal dialogue may stem from deep-seated fears and unresolved childhood experiences. Adults, even at age 40, 50, or 60, often react with the emotional framework of a child due to these inner protectors.
Unlocking the Memories
It's not unusual for people to report blank spaces in their childhood memories. These gaps often conceal painful or confusing experiences. Acknowledging and processing these are crucial steps toward healing.
Moving from Coping to Healing
The aim is not just to add coping mechanisms but to eliminate the emotional triggers that disrupt our progress. While coping skills can offer short-term relief, they sometimes leave the root triggers intact, risking a reversion to old problems.
A Path to Deleting Trauma Responses
Fortunately, there exists a process to permanently delete and remove learned trauma responses. This process promises to alleviate the fear of relapse, offering a holistic approach to healing by addressing the underlying trauma, and moving beyond just symptom management.
Symptoms or Root Cause?
A transformation to address the root cause of trauma and emotional triggers is necessary for genuine healing. By confronting and processing root causes rather than just managing symptoms, we pave the way for a healthier, more fulfilling life.
